Flanigan's U.S. History Moment to Remember
Do you know the other name given to the LA riots of 1992? They were also known as the [Insert Victim’s Name] riots.
During this week in 1992, the Los Angeles riots, also known as the Rodney King riots, occurred in mostly South Central LA. Looting, arson, and rioting began after the acquittal of 4 LA police officers who were being charged with excessive force and beating during the arrest of Rodney King. After 6 days of rioting, order was restored by the California National Guard as well as regular military units from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
Why does this matter today?
It seems the past few years, starting with the Ferguson riots in St. Louis in the summer of 2014, civil unrest over police brutality incidents has grown in visibility and activity across our Nation - including Kaepernick’s infamous game protests and the nationwide reaction to it. The issue continues to be an area that needs to be worked on and improved between police and their communities.
